Isolation or Loneliness
Feelings of loneliness and isolation can affect anyone and is much more than just being alone; it is a sense of emotional isolation and disconnection that a person can experience, even when they are surrounded by others.
Loneliness relates more to the quality of our relationships and our personal need for connection than the quantity of them. It is more common than many people think and affects as many as 1 in 5 Australians in any given year.
The Effects of Isolation or Loneliness
Isolation and loneliness are not considered a mental health conditions in their own right. However, given the importance of social connection, prolonged loneliness can impact both our mental and physical health.
Extended periods of loneliness can lead to depression or anxiety, increasing our sense of disconnection and making it feel harder to reach out to others. Because of this, it’s important to act sooner rather than later if loneliness is negatively impacting your daily life.
Some people’s experience of loneliness can lead them to think about suicide or self-harm. If you or someone you know are having thoughts of self-harm it is important to seek professional support.
