About Soul Medicine VAR
Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of veterans and serving personnel Australia-wide by providing veteran-led psychiatric care.
WHAT WE DO
The psychiatrists at Soul Medicine VAR provide mental health reviews and assessments for Australian Defence Force (ADF) veterans and serving personnel. These are primarily for Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) Initial Liability Claims and Permanent Impairment assessments. Our mission is to improve health and wellbeing of ADF serving members and veterans by providing veteran-led mental health care. Telehealth appointments allow us to offer that support across the whole of Australia.
BACKGROUND
Dr Rory Morris-Butler, MBBS MRCPsych FRANZCP, a psychiatrist and an ex-British Army Medical Officer, founded Soul Medicine VAR and leads its team of psychiatrists. His first foray into military service was as a Parachute Regiment recruit in 1991, however, he sustained an injury during basic training that ended his Parachute training. In 2000, Dr Morris-Butler completed his Combat Infantry Course (Reserve) with the 4th Battalion Parachute Regiment (4 PARA), a British Army unit. However, injury struck again during P COY (reserve), and unfortunately, he was unable to earn a maroon beret or wings as a result.

“If our work can make even the smallest improvement to a person’s experience of life during or after service, it is time well spent”
